Officials: Inmate fatally stabbed in Maryland prison

JESSUP, Md. -- Authorities say a 43-year-old inmate has been fatally stabbed during a fight at a Maryland prison.

Maryland State Police said in a statement that corrections officers found John A. O'Sullivan bleeding on the floor Sunday morning after a fight inside Jessup Correctional Institution in Anne Arundel County. Police say officers quickly took into custody several inmates seen walking away from O'Sullivan, who died at the prison.

Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services spokesman Gerard Shields said by telephone Monday that O'Sullivan began serving a 17-year, six-month sentence in 2005 for second-degree assault.

Investigators from the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit have interviewed inmates and served search warrants at the prison, according to a press release from the agency.

Police spokesman Greg Shipley says investigators have multiple suspects. No charges have been filed.

Police announced charges in a January slaying at the same prison Monday, but Shipley says there's no connection between the cases.
