"Sorry janitor": Village hall vandal includes apology

SEA CLIFF, N.Y. -- When a vandal broke into the Sea Cliff, N.Y., Village Hall last weekend and scrawled a message on a wall, the perpetrator was apparently aware that someone would have to clean up the mess, reports CBS New York.

"Let us chill in parks so we don't have to chill here!!! #give respect where respect is due," the intruder wrote, according to Sea Cliff Mayor Bruce Kennedy. "Sorry janitor."

Kennedy told CBS New York that the Village Hall in the Long Island community doesn't actually have a janitor, but the wall will be repainted by village employees. The mayor said the culprit pried open the window near a fire escape.

He said the vandalism may be in response to a recent crackdown on people hanging out in public parks after 10 p.m.

"We don't mind young people hanging out in the parks, but we do care about some of the incidents that have been going on, such as underage drinking, public pot smoking, vandalism, graffiti and littering," Kennedy said.

Police are investigating and asking anyone with information about the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
