Police officer stabbed in face released from hospital
STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- A Long Island police officer whose nose was nearly severed when he was stabbed in the face has been released from a hospital.
Newsday reports the Suffolk County police officer underwent four hours of surgery at Stony Brook University Hospital following the attack. He was released Sunday.
Police say the 20-year department veteran was responding to a report of a person acting irrationally and armed with knives in Central Islip on Saturday afternoon when he was attacked by 40-year-old Mark Caraway. The man was shot by another officer in the home.
Authorities didn't disclose the injured officer's name.
Caraway remains in critical condition. Charges haven't been filed against him.
