New York City firefighter shot while responding to blaze

NEW YORK -A New York City firefighter was shot in the leg Friday morning after a man barricaded himself inside a house, then set fire to it while authorities were trying to serve a warrant, reports CBS New York.

U.S. Marshals arrived at the two-story apartment house in the New York borough of Staten Island shortly before 6 a.m. That's when police said the man set a fire and started shooting.

A 54-year-old firefighter was struck in the lower leg, police said. He was taken to an area hospital in stable condition.

No other shots were fired. Police said the gunman was believed to be the only person inside the house.

A hostage negotiating team and other emergency personnel are on the scene. Police Commissioner Bill Bratton is also on the scene, CBS2's Janelle Burrell reported.
