New York City block named George Carlin Way
George Carlin now has his own block in Manhattan dubbed "George Carlin Way."
The late comedian was honored at a street-naming ceremony on Wednesday on 121st Street in the Morningside Heights area of Manhattan with comic guests in attendance, including Colin Quinn, Robert Klein, and Gilbert Gottfried, reports CBS New York.
Carlin grew up on West 121st Street between Broadway and Amsterdam.
"That neighborhood meant so much to him that he continued to be friends with all the people he grew up with, and hung on corners with and got into trouble with," Carlin's daughter, Kelly, told 1010 WINS. "[He] spoke a lot and often and very fondly about that neighborhood."
Known for his commentary on politics, religion and grammar, Carlin often tackled taboo subjects during his stand-up routines.
"The quote that's most important that George Carlin said is that it's the duty of a comedian to find out where the line is drawn and deliberately step over it," Gottfried said Wednesday.
George Carlin Way comes after a two-year petition drive that was approved this summer by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.
Carlin died in 2008 at age 71 following a series of heart issues.
