New "Star Trek" series coming to CBS

New Star Trek series to stream in 2017

Trekkies rejoice! A new "Star Trek" series is in the works at CBS.

CBS Television Studios announced Monday it will launch a "totally" new show in January 2017. It will be available exclusively on CBS All Access, the network's subscription streaming video service -- but will kick off with a preview episode that will air on traditional broadcast TV.

According to CBS, "The brand-new 'Star Trek' will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966." No cast members or plot details have been announced yet.

Behind the new series is executive producer Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote and produced 2009's "Star Trek" and "Star Trek Into Darkness" in 2013.

The original "Star Trek" series premiered on NBC in September 1966.
