New Orleans police: Officer shot in Lower 9th Ward
NEW ORLEANS -- New Orleans police say a Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputy working as part of a federal task force serving a warrant shot multiple times Tuesday morning and is being treated at a hospital.
Police spokeswoman Gerry Flot says the officer was working with the Drug Enforcement Administration in the Lower 9th Ward, a section of the city that saw much devastation from Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Officer Paul M. Noel told reporters at the scene that when law enforcement entered the house, one person inside opened fire. Police say the suspect was taken into custody and two other men who were inside are being questioned.
The officer's name wasn't released. According to CBS affiliate WWL, New Orleans police cruisers could be seen flanking an ambulance as the vehicle drove to University Medical Center early Tuesday morning, using rolling road blocks to close streets to get agent to the hospital as quickly as possible.
The condition of the deputy is unknown.
The incident happened in an area that abuts the levee protecting the neighborhood from the Mississippi River.
