Netflix snags international rights to upcoming "Star Trek" series

When CBS launches its new "Star Trek" TV series next year, Netflix will beam it out to other countries around the world.

The streaming television service has picked up worldwide rights to the series -- minus the U.S. and Canada, that is -- and plans to make episodes available to overseas fans within 24 hours of their U.S. premiere, it was announced Monday.

The new "Star Trek" series, produced by "Hannibal" boss Bryan Fuller, will debut in January 2017 on CBS and CBS All Access. "The launch of the new 'Star Trek' will truly be a global television event," CBS Studios International CEO Armando Nuñez said.

Netflix also purchased global streaming rights to the entire "Star Trek" television library, which includes "Star Trek: The Original Series," "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," among others. The company plans to make them available by the end of the year to fans around the globe.
