Murder investigation after woman found dead at UT Austin
AUSTIN, Texas -- Campus police at the University of Texas at Austin are investigating a homicide after a woman was found dead in a creek on campus Tuesday, officials said Tuesday.
According to CBS affiliate KEYE, the University of Texas police department responded to reports of a body in a creek on campus west of the Alumni Center at 10:46 a.m. Tuesday morning. The body is a woman in her 20s, the station reports.
School officials aren't releasing the name of the victim or any further details until family has been notified, university president Gregory Fenves said at a press conference. He said the school is working with Austin police to identify possible suspects.
Based on information from police, the campus is continuing to operate fully and all classes and events remain on schedule, according to Fenves.
The body has not yet been identified and the cause of death is still under investigation, a University of Texas police department spokesman said. He said the investigation was "labor intensive" and could take time.
Fenves expressed sympathy for the victim and her family and called it a "tragic day" for the 50,000 students and 14,000 faculty and staff who call the campus home.
"Our home has been violated today," Fenves said.
He said the university was working to ensure student safety. The campus will see increased patrols by law enforcement including the state Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers, he said.
