Mount Hood climber dies after 400-foot fall
MT. HOOD, Ore. - A climber was killed after falling 400 feet on Oregon's Mt. Hood on Thursday, officials tell CBS affiliate KOIN.
Sixty-six-year-old Ward Milo Maxfield, of Paul, Idaho, was with his 17-year-old grandson and two others when the fall took place, the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office says.
A spokesperson for the Sheriff's Office told CBS News that Maxfield fell around the 10,000 foot level, which is near the approximately 12,000-foot summit.
KOIN reports an American Medical Response Reach & Treat team was on the mountain training when the fall occurred. The rescue operations reportedly happened at about 9,500 feet.
Authorities said Thursday afternoon that they were still working on getting Maxfield's body down from the mountain.
Maxfield's family tells KOIN he was a very active and capable climber and that he had reached the summit of other mountains before.
