Morley Safer remembered on social media
Fans and colleagues alike were shaken by the death of "60 Minutes" newsman Morley Safer, whom CBS Chariman and CEO Les Moonves called "one of the most important journalists in any medium, ever."
Journalists, especially those who knew Safer, were among the most vocal people who mourned the iconic reporter on social media. Safer was in declining health when he announced his retirement last week. CBS aired a special hour to honor his retirement on Sunday that he watched at home.
Thursday morning, "60 Minutes" executive producer Jeff Fager tweeted, "Morley Safer has died. A masterful storyteller, inspiration to many of us and a wonderful friend."
Producer Keith Sharman added, "Beyond masterful storytelling & writing I'll remember Morley as a gent who treated everyone here w kindness&respect."
Anderson Cooper wrote, "What an incredible life and career #MorleySafer had. From Vietnam to his decades @60Minutes. There was no one else like him."
"Today" co-anchor Matt Lauer wrote about Safer's impact on journalism, saying, "Two pieces of advice for young broadcast journalists. 1. Watch Morley Safer's segments. 2. Repeat step one. A true professional/original."
