Miss Israel's selfie causes a stir in Lebanon

International spat over beauty queen selfie

Israeli beauty queen Doron Matalon took a photo with her fellow contestants at the Miss Universe competition in Miami last week and posted it to Instagram with a simple, cheery caption stating: "Good morning from us! Miss Japan , miss Slovenia, miss Lebanon & I."

In Lebanon, that was apparently a very bad idea.

A few days later, Saly Greige, a.k.a. Miss Lebanon, posted a version of the photo with Miss Israel cropped out.

She claimed she had been "very cautious to avoid being in any photo or communication with Miss isreal, who tried several times to take a photo with me. I was having a photo with Miss Japan, Miss Slovenia, suddenly Miss Israel jumped in and took a selfie, and uploaded it on her social media."

Lebanon's Daily Star newspaper describes the scene as a "photobombing" by Miss Israel. The paper writes: "Some Lebanese asked that Greige be stripped from her title for mingling with the citizen of an enemy state."

Tensions between Israel and Lebanon have been particularly high since the militant group Hezbollah rose to political power in 2006.

Thousands of Hezbollah supporters took to the streets on Monday in Lebanon, chanting "Death to Israel" during the funeral for one of its most prominent fighters killed the day before in what the group claimed was an Israeli airstrike in Syria.
