Minnesota's "miracle baby" continues to recover from 11-story fall

MINNEAPOLIS - In the arms of his mother, sitting on the living room floor watching cartoons, 15-month-old Musa Dayib is very much a 'miracle child,' reports CBS News station WCCO.

It was the evening of May 11, Mother's Day, when Musa toddled over to an eleventh floor balcony at the family's Riverside apartment complex.

He got onto the concrete balcony through a sliding door that his sister had opened.

The little boy managed to squeeze between the steel stiles of the protective railing and plunged over 100 feet to the ground.

Incredibly, Musa landed onto a small patch of mulch covered soil, next to the concrete sidewalk.

"It's something of a miracle from what had happened to him, falling from the eleventh floor. And the way he is right now and to survive that fall, that's a miracle. A big miracle," Aisha Said, the boy's grandmother, said through an interpreter.

Musa spent two weeks in pediatric intensive care at Hennepin County Medical Center. His injuries include an arm broken in two places, a broken left wrist and minor injuries to his vertebrae.

But incredibly, he apparently suffered no serious damage to his head or brain.

Now, one week after Musa was discharged from the hospital, his mother and grandmother say that angels were watching over the boy, gently lowering him to the ground.

That's in sharp contrast to the way she was feeling on Mother's Day, when the boy's mother Fadumo Abdullahi was devastated and frightened.

Now, the smile has returned to Abdullahi's face.

"Being given the opportunity that I can hold and take care of my baby, that's a tremendous gift and I am thankful to God for giving us that gift," Abdullahi said through an interpreter.

There will be a benefit dinner for Musa from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 12 at the Brian Coyle Community Center in Minneapolis to help the family defray medical expenses.

Donations are also accepted online through a fund dedicated to Musa Dayib.
