Michelle Obama gives White House dining room a slight makeover
The White House State Dining Room has received a slight makeover, courtesy of First Lady Michelle Obama.
The changes aren't too drastic, the Associated Press reports. New items include new silk draperies with blue and light beige stripes, which replaced an older pair of curtains made of ivory-colored silk, and a new set of mahogany and "horsehair" fabric dining chairs, which replaced an older set of chairs with yellow upholstery.
It's only the latest personal touch Mrs. Obama has put on the White House decorations. Previous updates included a new set of "Kailua Blue" fine china, and a revised look for the Old Family Dining Room, a less formal dining space adjacent to the State Dining room.
The Committee for the Preservation of the White House, an advisory panel tasked with overseeing refurbishments of the executive mansion, offered its stamp of approval to this latest upgrade.
The updated look for the State Dining Room cost $590,000, the Associated Press reports. The sum was paid by the White House Endowment Trust, a private fund ran by the White House Historical Association to maintain the portions of the White House that are open to the public.
