Michael Fassbender travels back in time in the first "Assassin's Creed" trailer

Nobody expects to be transported back to the Spanish Inquisition -- but that's just what happens to former death row inmate Callum (Michael Fassbender) in the big-screen adaptation of the popular video game series "Assassin's Creed."

After waking up post-execution, Fassbender's character finds himself in a mysterious new facility where a revolutionary technology unlocks his genetic memories, allowing him to experience the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar. He soon discovers that he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and finds a new sense of purpose.

"Assassin's Creed" hits theaters December 21, 2016.
