Melissa McCarthy has a gripe with the plus-size label
Melissa McCarthy has a gripe with the fashion label "plus-size."
The actress, who just launched her own clothing line, says she doesn't like the idea of clothing being segregated in stores.
"Women come in all sizes. Seventy percent of women in the United States are a size 14 or above, and that's technically 'plus-size,' so you're taking your biggest category of people and telling them, 'You're not really worthy.' I find that very strange," she told Refinery29. "I just think, if you're going to make women's clothing, make women's clothing. Designers that put everyone in categories are over-complicating something that should be easy."
Her line, dubbed Melissa McCarthy Seven7, is currently available at HSN, with sizes ranging from 4 to 28. The clothing line will soon be available at other large retailers and will launch on McCarthy's website starting Sept. 1.
McCarthy's brand will feature a variety of items. As for the jeans, McCarthy said she "made them a little higher," telling ETonline, "I think it's more comfortable. I also don't need to see any more people bend over and get a surprise."
McCarthy, 44, studied fashion before becoming starring in "Gilmore Girls" and "Mike and Molly" and hitting the big screen in "This Is 40," "Identity Thief" and "Tammy."
Catch her soon in the upcoming female-centric "Ghostbusters" reboot, which hits theaters next year.
