Mayor of Juneau found dead, police say

ANCHORAGE -- The newly-elected mayor of Juneau, Alaska, Stephen "Greg" Fisk was found dead Monday afternoon, according to Juneau Police, reports CBS affiliate KTVA.

Juneau police said Fisk's adult son dialed 9-1-1 to report he had found the mayor dead inside his residence in the city. The 70-year-old mayor was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police spokesman Erann Kalwara said the death was unattended, but couldn't immediately say if officers suspected any foul play. The police investigation was ongoing.

"The Medical Examiner's Office has authorized an autopsy. Results of the autopsy are expected within several days and will be used to determine the cause of death," the Juneau Police Department said in a statement which also dismissed any suggestions as to the circumstances of Fisk's death as "speculation."

District 1 Assembly member and deputy Mayor Mary Becker confirmed she would step up as acting mayor, reports KTVA.

"This is a devastating loss," Becker said in a phone interview with KTVA on Monday.

Becker, who called Fisk a "personal family friend" to her and her husband, said the city attorney is working with the Assembly to determine what happens next. Her second term on the Assembly was to last until 2016, while Fisk was elected to serve until 2018.

The Governor of Alaska Bill Walker offered his condolences on Twitter.

Fisk was also a fisheries consultant.
