After losing baby, NFL star Marquise Goodwin delivers again in wake of father's death
Marquise Goodwin already played a game last month after losing his premature son. Then last week, he dealt with the death of his father. Goodwin took the field Sunday and made 10 catches for 114 yards in another spectacular performance.
Goodwin shared a quick hug near the sideline with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo after the game.
"I've been dealing with a lot," Goodwin said, according to ESPN. "I'm blessed. I'm thankful for the opportunity. God has shown me so much in this season. I had a lot going on this year losing my baby, and I just recently lost my biological father this week. It's just been a lot, but I really didn't let the outside negative energy affect how I play, how I approach this game or how I come to work each day. I just kind of stayed positive and kept my mind fresh, and I relied on God to bring me through all of the situations that I've been through."
Last month, Goodwin and his wife opened up about the tragic death of their baby boy, and his difficult decision to take the field just hours later.
The San Francisco 49ers wide receiver scored an 83-yard touchdown. He blew a kiss to the sky as he crossed into the end zone, and dropped to his knees.
It wasn't until after the game that Goodwin and his wife, Morgan, revealed on social media their son had died, due to pregnancy complications.
After the death of their son, it was Morgan who encouraged her husband Marquise to play Sunday. Marquise told CBS News correspondent Dana Jacobson that he credited his wife, his faith and his son for helping carry him into the end zone.
"I would give my life up if I could have a boy. That's the one thing I wanted more than anything in the world and now I don't have that opportunity right now," Marquise said.
