Man wanted in murders detained in pond after bizarre chase
FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. --A California man police have called a person of interest in the murders of a woman and her infant son was detained Tuesday morning in a pond after a bizarre chase and police gunfire, reports CBS LA.
Police had reportedly been looking for 24-year-old Kwame Carpenter for questioning after they discovered a woman in her mid-20s and her six-month-old wounded early Monday in the Anaheim apartment Carpenter shared with them. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and the child later died at a hospital, reports CBS LA.
Police haven't yet identified the victims, but they say Carpenter is believed to be the baby's father. The victims were reportedly stabbed, but investigators have not confirmed that, reports the station.
Carpenter was found sleeping inside his vehicle Tuesday in a Fountain Valley hospital parking lot, according to the station.
OC Weekly reports that a hospital security guard saw a man inside a parked Lincoln Town Car around 3:30 a.m. and recognized the car and Carpenter as matching the descriptions for the person wanted for questioning in the murders. The guard reportedly notified a Santa Ana police officer who was on the hospital grounds, who contacted Fountain Valley police officers before they approached Carpenter in his car.
According to the paper, Carpenter refused to surrender and drove off, slamming into a Santa Ana police vehicle and another car. A Fountain Valley police office reportedly fired two rounds in his direction, but no one was injured.
Police pursued him in the car before Carpenter reportedly abandoned his vehicle and police chased him on foot. The paper reports he was chased and bit by a police dog before he jumped into a pond.
Video reportedly shows the man bobbing in the water before he was escorted out by police.
He was reportedly turned over to Anaheim police for questioning.
