Suspect in fatal Calif. boardwalk crash ordered to trial

VENICE, California – Nathan Louis Campbell, a Colorado man, was ordered on Wednesday to stand trial for murder, assault and other charges after a deadly hit-and-run on the Venice boardwalk killed a woman and injured over a dozen others last summer, reports CBS Los Angeles.

Campbell, 38, has been charged with one count murder, 17 counts of assault with a deadly weapon and 10 counts of leaving the scene of an accident.

On Aug. 3, 2013, Campbell allegedly drove his Dodge Avenger into a crowd on the Venice boardwalk at over 50 mph and then left the scene of the crime. He turned himself in to authorities later that night.

Alice Gruppioni, 32, an Italian woman in Venice on her honeymoon, was the only death among 17 casualties.

Campbell has an arrest record that includes offenses in four different states since 2002.

An arraignment was scheduled for Jan. 22.
