Man killed, 2 young girls shot at Jersey City church
JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- One man is dead and two teenage girls were hurt in a shooting at a church in Jersey City, just outside New York City, reports CBS New York.
Gunfire erupted Tuesday night inside the Holy Ghost Tabernacle Ministries, where a party was being hosted, according to police.
CBS New York reports that the two wounded girls suffered injuries to their heads. It's not clear where the victim who died was struck. One of the girls was able to run to a nearby fried chicken restaurant for help, according to CBS radio affiliate WINS.
Police have not released the names of the victims. It is not clear if the surviving victims suffered life-threatening wounds.
Witness Timmy Westgate told police he was surprised by the violent scene at a local church.
"We heard gunshots, wasn't really sure if it was gunshots or not, but then we saw police lights and everything, and then my friend called around the corner to check and see if her niece and nephews were fine and everything," Westgate said. "Who would think in Jersey City that something would happen at a church?"
No arrests have been made in the case.
