Man charged with killing aunt at Texas home they shared

DALLAS -- Investigators say a Dallas-area man has been accused of killing his 58-year-old aunt in the home they shared after allegedly trying to set the place on fire.

Dallas police say 29-year-old Ernest William Scruggs Jr. of Mesquite, Texas, was being held Wednesday on capital murder and arson charges, with $1.1 million bond.

Garland police Tuesday night arrested Scruggs on an arson warrant. Investigators say he provided information on the death of Georgia Lynn Scruggs.

An apartment complex manager discovered her body Jan. 13 after associates reported the hairdresser missed work, reports CBS Dallas. Reports say Georgia told friends that she had gotten death threats from a crazy family member.

A coroner says Georgia Scruggs died of sharp force injuries. Police believe she was killed Jan. 10 and her wallet and cellphone stolen.

Authorities didn't immediately provide details on the arson case or an attorney to speak for Ernest Scruggs.
