Man arrested in 2012 shooting of same-sex couple in Texas

HELOTES, Texas - A male suspect was arrested in the 2012 shooting that left a teenage woman dead and her girlfriend seriously injured, reports CBS affiliate KWTX.

David Malcolm Strickland, 27, was taken into custody Friday at an apartment in Helotes, a suburb of San Antonio, according to the station. He was named in warrants charging capital murder, aggravated assault with a weapon and aggravated sexual assault.

Nineteen-year-old Mollie Olgin and then-18-year-old Mary Kristene Chapa were attacked two years ago to the day on June 23, 2012, at Violet Andrews Park in Portland, seven miles north of Corpus Christi. Both teens were shot in the head; Olgin was killed and Chapa was critically injured.

KWTX reports the motive behind the attack was a mystery. Authorities said investigators found no evidence suggesting the women's relationship was a factor in the shooting.

It is unclear what led police to Strickland.

Chapa previously told CBS affiliate KZTV she was growing impatient that the shooter had not been found. "It is frustrating. I want closure from this. What if he's out there and he hurts someone else? I don't want that. I just want him to be put away already and get what he deserves."

The victims received an outpouring of support nationwide following the incident, especially in the gay and lesbian community, according to KWTX.
