Major suspect in Mumbai attacks could soon be free on bail

An anti-terrorism court in Pakistan's capital, Islamabad, granted bail Thursday to Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, one of the seven men accused of involvement in the 2008 terrorist attacks in the commercial city of Mumbai, India.

A Pakistani interior ministry official who spoke to CBS News said a government prosecutor opposed the decision by an Islamabad judge.

Still, the decision is "likely to enrage India and may hinder recent attempts to patch

up rocky relations between the nuclear-armed neighbors," the Reuters news agency said.

Reuters says Lakhvi was accused of masterminding of the attacks, which killed 166 people.

Local media reports said the judge asked Lakhvi to provide 'surety bonds' worth 500,000 rupees (about $4,910) for the bail to confirmed.

One of his lawyers told Reuters, "Hopefully, he will be out on Monday or Tuesday."
