Maine dad shares downsides of college daughter's visit

CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine -- Clothes all over the house, milk left out of the fridge, loud gatherings with friends. These are some of a Maine dad’s complaints about his college daughter being home for Christmas.

Dan Howard, of Cape Elizabeth, has posted a humorous two-minute video on Facebook in which he describes scenes that are likely familiar to any parent with a child home from college. The video has more than one million views.

“Real excited to see her, it’s been great,” he deadpans before recounting a litany of complaints.

Howard shares tales of carrying his daughter’s heavy luggage through the airport and being unable to sleep as she bakes cookies and cupcakes at 3 a.m. with her friends.

He also mentions his daughter has left piles of clothes on the floor.

“We don’t even go to the gym anymore. What we do is just jump over the piles,” he says. “We pretend they’re hurdles. Very good for the quads.”

Howard ends by jokingly wondering if he can get Uber to take her back to school early.

He doesn’t say his daughter’s name or where she goes to college in the video.

The humorous video comes at a time when young adults are spending more time at their parents’ homes. Almost 40 percent of young adults lived with their parents, step-parents, grandparents and other relatives last year, or the highest point in 75 years, according to data from real estate analytics company Trulia.
