Maggie Gyllenhaal told 37 is "too old" to play 55-year-old's love interest
Maggie Gyllenhaal said she was recently blindsided by losing a role for being "too old," even though she is still well under 40.
The 37-year-old star of the SundanceTV miniseries "The Honhourable Woman" revealed to TheWrap said she'd been turned down for a role because she was too old to play the love interest for a 55-year-old man.
"It was astonishing to me. It made me feel bad, and then it made me feel angry, and then it made me laugh," the Oscar-nominated actress admitted in the interview.
"There are things that are really disappointing about being an actress in Hollywood that surprise me all the time," Gyllenhaal added.
Earlier this month, the American Civil Liberties Union ramped up attention to discriminatory practices in showbiz with their demand for state and federal agencies to investigate the failure of studios to hire reasonable proportions of seasoned and aspiring female actors to male actors, claiming "rampant discrimination" in the industry. In a similar vein, the Center for the Study of Women in Television, Film & New Media at San Diego State University recently released a study which found that only 12 percent of leading roles in 2014's top 100 domestic grossing films and gone to females.
