Lou Dobbs' tweet on third-party candidate Evan McMullin sparks #MormonMafia trend
It all started when Fox Business host Lou Dobbs threw out an angry tweet this weekend about Evan McMullin, the anti-Donald Trump third-party candidate making waves in the traditionally Republican state of Utah.
Dobbs, a staunch Trump supporter, seemed to be reacting to an article from right-wing website Gateway Pundit saying the independent McMullin -- who is a member of the Church of Latter-day Saints -- wants to prevent the GOP nominee from winning the White House. In his tweet, the Fox host called McMullin a Mitt Romney “Mormon Mafia Tool”:
Look Deeper, He's nothing but a Globalist, Romney and Mormon Mafia Tool #MAGA #AmericaFirst #TrumpPence16 #TrumpTrain #Dobbs https://t.co/WfjYzck2jt

And because the internet is a wondrous place, the #MormonMafia trend was born.
Here are some of the best #MormonMafia tweets, mashing up quotes from “The Godfather” “Scarface,” and various other mobster cliches, with the anodyne stereotypes of LDS church members.

And of course, there’s this pun on the Mormon church’s ban on caffeinated beverages:

McMullin seemed to take the trending hashtag in stride, even capitalizing on the sudden Twitter popularity:
The strength of @TeamMcMullin is that we're the #MormonMafia...& the Jewish, Catholic, Evangelical, Hindu, Muslim, or no Mafia Mafias! 🇺🇸
