Texas officer shot when gunman opens fire from inside home

LITTLE ELM, Texas -- Police say a Texas officer was shot while responding to the report of a man with a gun, reports CBS DFW.

The incident started around 3 p.m. in a residential neighborhood in Little Elm, north of Dallas. Police reportedly heard a man yelling from the backyard of a home and saw he was carrying a rifle. As officers were trying to talk to the man, according to the station, he went inside the home and started firing through a door or a window.

An officer was struck and rushed by helicopter to the hospital. His condition wasn’t immediately known.

Tuesday afternoon, a Denton Sheriff’s Department tactical team was attempting to communicate with the man, who was still barricaded inside the home. Schools in the area were releasing students to parents after initially being placed on lockdown, the station reports.
