Parts of L.A. on alert after gunfire aimed at 2 cops
LOS ANGELES -- A tactical alert was called for much of southern Los Angeles Sunday night following a report of two suspects firing on city police officers with a rifle, says CBS Los Angeles. The officers returned fire, the station adds.
Every available officer was sent to the vicinity.
One suspect was said to be in custody, and the second was being sought.
Authorities said two officers were driving in their patrol car when they saw the muzzle of a rifle being fired in their direction.
It wasn't clear if the weapon was recovered or if more than one weapon was used in the possible attack.
No officers were injured.
The LAPD says it is investigating whether the incident is similar to the one in New Yok City in which two officers were slain earlier this month, but there is no confirmation of any kind that this was an inc ident along the same lines.
The deaths at police hands of Michael Brown in Ferugson, Missouri and Eric Garner in New York City's Staten Island have drawn sharp attention nationwide to police treatment of members of the public, sparking numerous protests in many cities.
