Caught on video: Kangaroo attacks girl at zoo
MADISON COUNTY, Ala. -- A kangaroo attacked a 9-year-old girl over the weekend at an Alabama zoo -- an incident that was captured on video, CBS Huntsville affiliate WHNT reports.
The video starts with two children moving around near a fence. A kangaroo, on the other side, then reaches through the fence and grabs the girl's head.
The video continues, capturing piercing screams and cries of "Help! Help!"
"It grabbed her through the fence and chewed on her head... It ripped her ear," a voice can be heard saying in the video. "He grabbed her. She was bending down to get something and it grabbed her through the fence."
The girl's mother, Jennifer White, shared the video with WHNT. She said she is unhappy with how Harmony Park Safari -- where the attack took place -- handled the situation. She doesn't believe staff responded adequately to the incident, WHNT reported.
A spokesperson for the United States Department of Agriculture, which regulates zoos, says a complaint has been filed against Harmony Park Safari. A spokesperson said that it came from an outside source, and that it is one of two complaints filed against Harmony Safari Park this year, WHNT reported.
The park has said that there are warning signs at its entrance. Many have also noted that the kangaroo enclosure is clearly labeled that the animal bites, according to the Huntsville station.
