Jury selection begins in case of slain Wisconsin teen

WEST BEND, Wis. - Jury selection is underway in the case of a 20-year-old charged with murdering a teenage girl and attacking a woman in Wisconsin last year.

Daniel Bartelt is charged with one count of first-degree intentional homicide in the death of 19-year-old Jessie Blodgett on July 15, 2013, in Hartford, Wis.

CBS affiliate WDJT reports Blodgett's body was found at home by her mother after the girl had attended a cast party for a town performance of Fiddler on the Roof. She died within 12 hours of that party.

Detectives discovered strangulation marks on the victim's neck, according to the station. However, authorities could not find anything in her home that may have caused it.

Bartelt was arrested two weeks after Blodgett's body was found, on July 29, 2013.

The suspect also faces an attempted first-degree intentional homicide charge in an attack on a woman at a park three days before Blodgett's death. He's charged in that case with one count each of first-degree recklessly endangering safety and false imprisonment.

Bartelt submitted dual pleas in November of not guilty and not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. His lawyer said the defense "had issues regarding his competency."

He faces life in prison if convicted.
