Judge: Oxford High School shooter can be sentenced to life without parole

Expert breaks down judge's decision in Oxford High School shooter's sentencing guidelines

(CBS DETROIT) - Oakland County Judge Kwame Rowe announced Friday that Oxford High School shooter Ethan Crumbley can spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole for killing four students in November 2021.

Friday's announcement followed a four-day Miller hearing that concluded in August. Judge Rowe determined that the shooter is eligible for the sentence.

In December 2021, the shooter was charged with 24 counts, including terrorism causing death, four counts of first-degree premeditated murder, seven counts of assault with intent to murder, and 12 counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

The shooter pled guilty on Oct. 24, 2022.

The last time the shooter appeared in court was on Aug. 18 for closing arguments. During that fourth and final day of the Miller hearing, psychiatrist Dr. Lisa Anacker testified for the prosecution and was the only witness to testify.

"I commend the teachers and students who testified about what happened at Oxford High School that day, and I hope the result today brings the victims, their families, and the Oxford community some comfort," said Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald.

The shooter's sentencing date will be in person and is scheduled for Dec. 8 at 9 a.m. Victims will have the opportunity to provide statements at the sentencing.
