John Lewis: Crowd-surfing with Stephen Colbert was “amazing”
Georgia Rep. John Lewis has been through a lot in his remarkable life – he crossed the bridge at Selma, he’s been beaten and arrested in his fight for civil rights, and he’s served in Congress for nearly three decades.
So when “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert asked Lewis, at the end of an interview last month, whether he’d like to crowd-surf, the intrepid congressman accepted the offer without hesitation.
“It was amazing. It was amazing,” Lewis said of the experience during an interview with “Face the Nation” host John Dickerson. “I just wanted people to keep me up and not let me hit the floor. Colbert said, ‘Do you want to do this?’ I said, ‘Yes!’ You know, I crossed that bridge, I’ve been beaten and arrested, I’ve sat in jail, so just going with the flow. I thought it would be okay and it did work out.”
Lewis spoke with Dickerson Friday from inside the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which is set to open later this month on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. You can see another preview of that interview here. Make sure you tune in Sunday for more!
