Cops: Mom found dead in minivan with kids bought gun the day before

LONE TREE, Colo. -- Investigators say a woman bought a handgun the day before she and her two young sons were found shot to death in their parked minivan in suburban Denver.

Jennifer Laber, 36 Douglas County

Lone Tree Police Sgt. Tim Beals says Jennifer Laber, 36, bought the semi-automatic handgun about an hour before she picked up her 3- and 5-year-old sons early from school Tuesday. Their bodies were found in the vehicle near the loading dock of a shuttered sporting goods store Wednesday morning. A passerby reported seeing the vehicle in a strange place and reported it to police.

Laber died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound and the two boys died of gunshot wounds, but The Denver Post reports police stopped short of calling the case a murder-suicide. Still, Beals says there are no suspects, and investigators have not provided any other explanation for how the three died.

CBS Denver reports that Laber’s mother, Linda Krannich, who lives in Minnesota, told the station that Laber was happily married and was a stay-at-home mom.

Laber’s husband, who reported his wife and sons missing, is not considered a suspect. The family reportedly moved to Colorado from Minnesota two years ago.

“We certainly didn’t see this horrific ending that this case has come to today,” said Douglas County Chief Deputy Steve Johnson Wednesday.
