James Gandolfini's final film "The Drop" scores new trailer

The first trailer for James Gandolfini's final film has been released.

The late "Sopranos" star -- who died from a heart attack at 51 in 2013 while vacationing in Rome, Italy -- will appear in the upcoming gangster drama "The Drop," based on the short story "Animal Rescue" from author Dennis Lehane, who also wrote the screenplay. Lehane's other works "Gone Baby Gone, "Shutter Island" and "Mystic River" have all previously been adapted to the big screen.

Gandolfini plays the former owner of a New York bar that's being used as a money drop-off point for gangsters. The film also stars British actor Tom Hardy, who can be heard speaking with a thick Brooklyn accent. "Prometheus" star Noomi Rapace plays a possible love interest for Hardy's character.

"The Drop" falls into theaters on Sept. 12.
