James Cameron promises even more "Avatar" sequels
Almost seven years after "Avatar" broke box office records, director James Cameron is revising his sequel plans yet again.
The "Titanic" filmmaker has long vowed that follow-ups to his hit 2009 film were on the way, skipping right past the traditional release of second stand-alone installment to instead simultaneously make the second, third and fourth films in what would become a franchise. And though those three films have yet to go into production, Cameron now vows that there will actually be four movies in total, with the first hitting theaters in 2018.
"The next time I see you will be on Pandora," Cameron said at 20th Century Fox's CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas on Thursday. He also suggested that the four films are still in the scriptwriting phase.
The subsequent films would then be released in 2020, 2022 and 2023. Cameron told the audience that the films, while produced concurrently, would be stand-alone stories combining to form a "complete saga."
"It's going to be a true, epic saga that's told in this rich and complex world," Cameron said. He also discussed plans for a theme park attraction made in conjunction with Disney.
