West Virginia inmate escaped more than a day before being discovered missing
KANAWHA COUNTY, WV - A West Virginia inmate escaped from jail Wednesday morning and it took officials more than a day to realize he was gone.
West Virginia State Police are looking for 43-year-old Todd Boyes, who state police say was reported missing around 12:30 a.m. Friday. He is considered armed and dangerous.
According to a statement from the West Virginia Department of Military Affairs & Public Safety, authorities believe Boyes left the South Central Region Jail early Wednesday morning, but multiple head-counts failed to uncover his absence.
After he was finally discovered missing at about 7 p.m. Thursday, investigators found security footage that showed him leaving the facility the morning before. He was wearing khaki pants and a dark grey or green zip-up jacket.
CBS affiliate WOWK reports Boyes was being held for attempted murder and fleeing in connection to a police chase in the Charleston area that resulted in a police officer being injured.
Boyes is described as 5'6" tall and weighing about 220 pounds. He reportedly has a clean-shaven face and a bald head. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt, dark colored pullover shirt, and tan pants.
The exact circumstances of Boyes' escape and whether inmate count procedures were properly followed are still under investigation.
