How to register to vote for the 2016 presidential election

Updated Wednesday, Oct. 12 with federal judge pushing voter registration deadline in Florida to Oct. 18 due to Hurricane Matthew.

The presidential election is now just four weeks away, and voter registration windows are rapidly closing. 

In five states – like Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Rhode Island and Mississippi – the deadlines have already passed.

October 11 is the last day voters can register in 12 states:

-Arkansas

-Georgia

-Indiana

-Kentucky

-Louisiana

-Michigan

-New Mexico

-Ohio

-Pennsylvania

-South Carolina

-Tennessee

-Texas

In Montana, Nevada, Utah and Washington, D.C., October 11 is the last day voters can register by mail. 

A number of states, including Colorado and Connecticut, permit in-person registration on Election Day.
