Houston driver survives 25-foot drop into construction pit

HOUSTON - A man survived a 25-foot fall after driving his truck into a pit at a Houston construction site early Saturday morning, CBS affiliate KHOU reported.

According to witnesses, the driver ran several red lights and struck the side of another vehicle before swerving through a fence and into a high-rise construction site. Several onlookers jumped into the pit to rescue the driver, who was unconscious.

"It was a miracle (he survived), to be honest with you," one witness, who climbed into the pit, told KHOU. "The last thing he remembered was he was driving and someone kind of cut him off and he woke up to me waking him up and that's all he remembered."

The Houston Fire Department arrived on the scene to rescue the man, and assist everyone who climbed down into the pit get back to safety. The driver was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital where he's listed in stable condition, the station reports.

Police believe alcohol may have played a factor in the incident, according to KHOU.
