House where 3 dead babies were found ordered to be torn down
BLACKSTONE, Mass. -- The squalid Massachusetts home where the remains of three infants were found has been ordered torn down.
The Blackstone Board of Health on Tuesday ordered the home's owner to demolish the structure within seven days, or face fines of $500 per day.
Board Chairman William Walsh says even after 90 hours of work by hazmat teams, the home still has a strong odor and will never be suitable for habitation.
"How anybody could live in a structure like that where you had vermin, dog feces and human feces on the walls and ceilings in the attic, it was just a horrendous scene," Walsh told CBS Boston.
Erika Murray is being held without bail on charges including fetal death concealment and permitting substantial injury to a child.
The human remains were found in the rodent and insect infested house earlier this month. Four other children had been removed from the home two weeks earlier.
Police, health inspectors and social services had visited the home 29 times since 2000, according to documents obtained by CBS Boston.
The owner, Kristina Rivera of Woonsocket, Rhode Island, is the sister of Murray's boyfriend. Town officials say Rivera, who has ignored their requests and orders, already owes $20,000 in cleanup costs.
Neighbors said tearing down the house would be a relief.
"I think the town should knock this property down but I think that the expense should be billed to the owner," neighbor Judy Morrow-Maloney told CBS Boston.
