Hillary Clinton surprises Katy Perry at UNICEF gala

Hillary Clinton has largely stayed out of the limelight since conceding the presidential election three weeks ago, but she made a surprise appearance at a New York City gala Tuesday night.

She attended the event, for the humanitarian children’s group UNICEF, to present an award to singer Katy Perry. Perry was very supportive of Clinton throughout her campaign, stumping with her and holding get-out-the-vote concerts on her behalf.

“I’ve gotten to spend time with her and I know how deeply she cares about making our world a better place,” Clinton said. “She is serious about understanding the complex problems we face and pulling people together to solve them.”

The country needs “champions like Katy now more than ever,” Clinton continued, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd.

Perry, who has worked with UNICEF since 2013 and received the Audrey Hepburn Humanitarian Award, was surprised by Clinton’s appearance and offered up praise of the former presidential hopeful.

“I’ve always had a voice, a singing voice, but I’ve never had a voice like I’ve had before,” Perry said. “Hillary has lit that voice inside of me, and that light will never go out, it will continue to get brighter and brighter and brighter.”

Tuesday night’s event was just Clinton’s second major public appearance since Election Day: her first was a speech at the Children’s Defense Fund gala in D.C. on Nov. 16.
