Hannah Graham suspect previously investigated for rape
New details have emerged that the suspect in the case of a missing University of Virginia student was dismissed from his previous university for complaints of rape.
And yet the investigation does not seem to be any closer to finding Hannah Graham.
CBS News correspondent Wyatt Andrews reports from Charlottesville, Virginia, where the 18-year-old vanished nearly two weeks ago, that the police admitted they are just about out of leads in the search for the 18-year-old.
Their main suspect, Jesse Matthew, will soon be returned to custody in Virginia, but investigators say they need more information about the night Graham went missing.
Law enforcement officials in Virginia await Matthew's return from Texas, where he was arrested Wednesday. They hope to question Matthew and have asked the public for more help because they are running out of clues in the search for Graham.
"There is this large significant block of time between the time we know Hannah Graham disappeared and the time that disappearance was reported to us," Police Chief Timothy Longo said. "We need to shrink that gap."
For now, police say they remain unable to talk to their suspect.
"He invoked his right to remain silent and his right to counsel," Longo said. "We cannot re-approach him until such time as he chooses otherwise."
CBS News has confirmed that 12 years ago, when Matthew was a student at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, he was investigated on a complaint of rape.
William Haith was Matthew's teammate on the football team.
"There were a few rumors that the sex was aggressive," Haith said. "There were several different rumors that were not verified at all."
No criminal charges were filed, but Haith says Matthew was dismissed from Liberty. The Christian University has a strict code of conduct.
"He broke a rule at Liberty University , which was engaging in sex," Haith said.
When Graham disappeared Sept. 13, she became the fifth young woman reported missing from Charlottesville over the last five years.
All five vanished within a few miles of Route 29, the main highway that runs through the city.
A law enforcement source told CBS News that the FBI and local police will try to determine if the evidence connects Matthew to any of the other cases.
CBS News was unable to reach Matthew's attorney Thursday for comment.
Matthew's family, friends and co-workers uniformly describe him as a friendly and soft-spoken and express shock that he's been charged with this crime.
