Handwritten note found next to UNC student's body in 2012

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - A handwritten note was found next to the body of a University of North Carolina student who was found dead in her off-campus apartment nearly two years ago, according to newly released police documents.

Police have made no arrests in the Sept. 7, 2012, death of 19-year-old Faith Hedgepeth of Hollister at an apartment complex.

Authorities released hundreds of pages of notes, search warrants and other documents in the case Friday in an effort to generate new leads. Chapel Hill Police Chief Chris Blue said Thursday he is asking for the public to provide any information it might have to help in the investigation.

Investigators found Hedgepeth's partially nude body leaning against a bed. Medical examiners say she died from blows to the head. Investigators say she and her roommate had gone out and returned to the apartment together, and then the roommate left alone.

In documents released this week, it was revealed that a handwritten note on a fast-food takeout bag was found on the center of the bed near Hedgepeth's body. It read, "I'm Not Stupid (expletive) Jealous," reports CBS affiliate WRAL.

Investigators found semen on Hedgepeth, according to the station, but police wouldn't say whether she had been sexually assaulted. DNA from the semen reportedly matched a man's DNA that was found elsewhere in the apartment.

According to newly released warrants, investigators initially identified several men as persons of interest in the case - including an ex-boyfriend of Hedgepeth's roommate as well as a man Hedgepeth left a Chapel Hill night club with just hours before she died.

Warrants reportedly revealed that investigators suspected the ex-boyfriend of Hedgepeth's roommate after they received information that he allegedly resented Hedgepeth because of the influence she had over her roommate. Detectives say in the warrants that he told Hedgepeth he was going to kill her if the roommate didn't get back together with him.

The ex-boyfriend later posted a message to someone on Twitter "asking them to forgive him for what he was about to do," the warrants allege, according to WRAL.

Investigators have executed a number of search warrants and court orders for computers, phones, social media accounts and financial records. They have asked potential suspects to provide oral DNA swabs to compare with material gathered at the scene. Police have not said whether any of the persons of interest have been cleared, but Police Chief Blue said no DNA match has been made.

However, Blue reinforced Friday that the investigation into Hedgepeth's murder remains active. Three detectives from his department and the State Bureau of Investigation continue to work exclusively on the case.

A $40,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Hedgepeth's killer.
