Grammy nominee reflects on losing his daughter
Ana Márquez-Greene was six years old when she was gunned down with 19 other children at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012. Four months later, her father, jazz saxophonist Jimmy Greene, spoke to Scott Pelley about his family's agonizing loss (see an excerpt in the video player above).
"Our daughter, Ana, was six years old. And in those six years, I can look back and say it was an honor to know her," Greene told Pelley. "She taught me a lot about myself. She taught me about how to love, how to give."
Since the shooting, Greene and his wife, therapist Nelba Márquez-Greene, have advocated for common sense gun safety legislation and started "The Ana Grace Project" to help children and families. But Greene has also channeled his grief into music, with "Beautiful Life," an album inspired by his daughter, which is nominated for two Grammys at the Feb. 15 awards ceremony, airing on CBS.
Jimmy and Nelba spoke to Gayle King of CBS This Morning last month. "They say after a trauma, there's three normal responses. You know, fight, flight or freeze," Nelba told King. "And I think what Jimmy did is he showed, and he is showing people, that there's another way -- and that's create."
