Good Samaritan comes to the rescue... in socks, in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO - A Good Samaritan wearing only socks on his feet chased two teenagers for five miles after they allegedly attacked an elderly woman and tried to steal her car, reports CBS Sacramento.

Cody Hendrix said the incident began Thursday when he heard a loud crash outside his Sacramento home. An elderly woman was hurt and two teenagers took off down the street on foot.

Investigators say the teens - 18-year-old William Dexter and a 16-year-old girl - had flagged down the 73-year-old woman in a nearby parking lot and asked for a ride home. When she agreed, the teens led her to Hendrix's road where police say they allegedly attacked her with a crowbar before fleeing the scene.

"I didn't want them to leave; I didn't want them to get away," Hendrix told the station.

In just his socks -- no other footwear -- Hendrix followed the teens for five miles through several neighborhoods, down busy roads and over fences trying to convince them to come back to the scene, reports the station.

"There were times they would get too tired, and they would walk and I would walk with them, trying to stop them," he said.

Hendrix said thinking about his own grandmother kept him going.

"If that happened to her I'd be distraught," he said. "They picked a nice quiet street and it was the wrong street. I'm not a religious man but someone was watching out for her that day."

The chase stretched on for an hour and ended at Del Paso Manor Elementary School where the teens sat down on a bench and surrendered.

"About three minutes later, I see the cop rolling through next to the park, the school, and waved him down," Hendrix said.

Dexter had a warrant out already for his arrest in Placer County. The 16-year-old girl was booked into juvenile hall, according to CBS Sacramento.
