Girl, 9, dies after being dragged by school bus, Mass. police say
PLAINFIELD, MA -- Massachusetts State Police are investigating an incident where a 9-year-old girl died after she was dragged by a school bus after exiting, CBS affiliate WSHM reports.
The accident occurred at around 4 p.m. this afternoon when she was dropped off at her stop on South Cenral Street in Plainfield.
Investigators currently believe that upon exiting, the young girl was not fully clear from the bus when the door was closed.
She was then caught in the door as the operator drove away, leaving her to be dragged a short distance and struck by the bus.
The girl was a student of the school in the area and a number of other children were present on the bus.
The name of the school or the bus company has not been released at this time.
The male operator of the bus is being interviewed by State Police detectives attached to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.
State troopers from the Northampton Barracks, Planfield Fire and EMS responded to the scene.
A State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Team along with the The State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section has processed the scene.
