George R.R. Martin responds to disturbing "Game of Thrones" scene

Sunday's episode of "Game of Thrones" ended with a horrific turn of events for Sansa Stark -- horrific even by "Game of Thrones" standards -- and now both George R.R. Martin and actress Sophie Turner have weighed in on that final scene. (Warning: Spoilers ahead.)

"Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken" ends with Sansa (who has already endured so much strife and turmoil over the show's five seasons) being raped on her wedding night by now-husband Ramsay Bolton, who makes Reek/Theon Greyjoy watch.

This is a major departure from Sansa's storyline in Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" books, but Martin took to his blog to defend the changes the show has made.

"How many children did Scarlett O'Hara have? Three, in the novel. One, in the movie. None, in real life: she was a fictional character, she never existed. The show is the show, the books are the books; two different tellings of the same story," Martin wrote. "There have been differences between the novels and the television show since the first episode of season one. And for just as long, I have been talking about the butterfly effect. Small changes lead to larger changes lead to huge changes."

"And yes, more and more, [the books and the show] differ," he added. "Two roads diverging in the dark of the woods, I suppose... but all of us are still intending that at the end we will arrive at the same place."

And in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Turner revealed she "kinda loved" that scene.

"I love the way Ramsay had Theon watching," she said. "It was all so messed up. It's also so daunting for me to do it. I've been making [producer Bryan Cogman] feel so bad for writing that scene: 'I can't believe you're doing this to me!' But I secretly loved it."
