Gay weddings: What would Rick Santorum do?
Christian conservative Rick Santorum, the former senator considering a presidential bid, said Thursday that he would not attend a same-sex wedding -- even if it were a loved one or family friend getting married.
"I would not," Santorum replied to radio host Hugh Hewitt. When asked why not, he said, "Because I don't, I've just self, as a person of my faith, that would be something that would be a violation of my faith. I would love them and support them, but I would not participate in that ceremony."
As the public grows increasingly supportive of same-sex marriage, the issue has become a thorny one for the GOP. While some conservatives like Santorum stand staunchly opposed, others are trying to show more tolerance. Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio said Wednesday that he'd attend a same-sex wedding if it involved somebody close to him - even though, he said, he still believes in a "traditional," heterosexual definition of marriage.
The 2016 presidential candidates will find it hard to avoid questions about the issue in the coming months, given that the Supreme Court later this month will finally consider whether gay couples have a constitutional right to marry.
