FSU coach: "No victim... no crime" in Jameis Winston case

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Coach Jimbo Fisher says Florida State's Jameis Winston has committed no crime and is adamant the quarterback will not miss any games this season due to an ongoing sexual assault investigation.

Fisher said Monday recent reports about the investigation haven't revealed any new facts.

"The facts are the facts. .. There is no victim because there was no crime," Fisher said.

Florida State announced last week that Winston will face a disciplinary hearing into the 2012 assault. No hearing date has been set.

A female student said Winston sexually assaulted her in December 2012. Florida State Attorney Willie Meggs declined to press charges against Winston last December due to inconsistencies and flaws in the evidence.

Both the Tallahassee Police Department and Florida State University have been criticized for not properly investigating the allegations against Winston, a Heisman trophy winner.

On Friday, The New York Times and Fox Sports released stories claiming the police and the university interfered with and stalled the investigation. The university released a response to the reports, marking its first public comments on the case.

"We did not want you to confuse our silence with idleness, a lack of caring or, as some have alleged, an institutional conspiracy to protect a star athlete," the university's statement said in part.

FSU is obligated to investigate sexual assault under Title IX, and the school says it initiated a probe last November but suspended it, citing a lack of evidence. The Department of Education launched a federal investigation into the university in April, and the university reopened the Winston investigation four months later.
