Former student accused of bringing gun onto Florida high school campus
CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – Police arrested a former student who they said brought a loaded 9-millimeter handgun onto a Florida campus Monday, reports CBS Miami.
The 17-year-old faces several charges, including a felony count of possession of a firearm on school property, after allegedly bringing a handgun onto the Coral Springs High School campus.
Coral Springs police said a friend of the suspect had written a 10-page manifesto about shooting people at the school. The friend allegedly named it “Terror Day.”
Investigators said the suspect, who dropped out of the school last year, flashed the loaded weapon to a friend and walked into the school cafeteria.
A male student saw the gun, told two female students and those girls alerted the school resource officer, according to police.
“He was intercepted very quickly by our school resource officer,” said Sgt. Carla Kmiotek.
Police placed the school on lockdown while they arrested the teen and searched for his friend. Police are not sure at this point that the pair were acting together but they said the two teens had spoken in the past about school shootings.
“What happened today with our [suspect] and then the journal recovered from the associate does depict that same kind of violence against the school, school shootings,” Kmiotek said.
The friend was detained on campus and brought to a facility that specializes in mental health care, police said.
